FAQ
What do you require before you begin writing the drill?

I will not begin writing until contracts have been signed by both parties (myself and the client) and the deposit has been received. Additionally, I require full wind scores for the show, and any specific instructions for the color guard (staging, equipment changes, etc.). If no color guard instructions are given – I will write for them to my own better judgement. Percussion scores are incredibly helpful in the design process but are not required.

What process(es) do you use in your drill writing?

After negotiation and signing of contracts, we will have an initial consultation. Here we will discuss my role in the show design, and what you are looking for in the drill. As I write the drill, I will check in very often to make sure the show is progressing to your satisfaction. Typically, I will send the client a copy of each movement of the show, as it's completed, for approval before continuing on to the remaining movements. This usually helps to avoid any unnecessary re-writes later on in the season.

What will I receive upon delivery of your drill?

Upon completion of the drill, I will send you  .pdf files of drill charts as well as coordinate sheets. I can also include a  .mpeg file of the drill's animation, so you can see how the transitions work from set to set. (Similar to what is shown on the Samples page of this site.) If I have an MP3 file of your show music, I can synch the animation to the music, so you can view the show as it's intended to fit with the music.

Upon special requests, I can submit to you hard copies of the drill files, however I prefer to submit the drill electronically, so that you have instant access to any pages that may have been damaged or lost.

What is your policy on rewrites?

If there is an error in the drill that is a result of incorrect information from the directors (ex. incorrect number of marchers were given, change in music that was not communicated to me, etc.) then an additional fee will be assessed for the rewrites. This fee will be based on how much of the drill needs to be changed, and the amount of time in which I have to write it.

Hopefully, through my constant contact with the band directors through the drill design process, we will avoid any “creative conflicts” in the final product.

Do you provide any other design services (program/concept design, music arranging, color guard work, etc.)?

With some of the schools I’ve worked with, I have taken an active role in developing a theme or concept in the program, either in conjunction with the music or a visual concept to compliment the musical selections. Additionally, I typically work very closely with the music arranger planning effect moments, and editing the music to ensure continuity and flow. That being said, I do not write/arrange music. However, I do have colleagues that I have collaborated with in the past and will gladly recommend an arranger to you, should you require one.

I have also dealt with some school situations where no guard designer has been hired at the time of the drill design, so I’ve had to take it upon myself to determine specific staging moments and impact points for the guard. Additionally, I’ve contributed to the color scheme and flag design in conjunction with the directors. I do not design color guard work, but can direct you to some colleagues who do.

Do you provide instructional services?

Yes. For an additional fee, I’ll be happy to assist in the instruction of your marching show, providing it will fit into my schedule.
